"Westmännerinseln" - is a group of works expressing the force of water at a truly profound level. After traveling to the "Vestmannaeyjar", an archipelago off Iceland’s south coast, formed by underwater volcanic eruptions, Werner Knaupp found a place that combined two of his favorite topics – the Protean powers of Water and Fire. The actual islands are the volcanic chimneys - the hardest material. The surrounding volcano has been pounded away by the incessant force of water.
"I had to become water to paint water", the artist once famously said. The result of which can be experienced in his paintings.
